The honest answer: Dance Fridays at Space 550

If you are searching for Friday night salsa in San Francisco, you probably want three things: a real dance floor, people who actually dance, and a night that happens every week so you can build a habit. That is exactly what Dance Fridays is. It happens every Friday at Space 550 in southeast San Francisco, it has two dedicated rooms — one for salsa and one for bachata — and it includes beginner lessons with admission, so you do not have to know how to dance before you walk in.

Dance Fridays is produced by SalsaCrazy / DanceCrazy Productions, which has been producing Latin dance events in San Francisco since 1995. Past productions include Cafe Cocomo nights, Hot Bachata Nights, Salsa in the Square at Union Square and the SF Summer Salsa Series. On Eventbrite, the organizer is an Eventbrite Top Organizer with more than 1,400 events and more than 105,400 attendees. That track record is why Friday is the night the Bay Area salsa crowd plans around.

Longtime dancers often say Space 550 is reminiscent of the Cafe Cocomo era in San Francisco and the old Copacabana in New York around 2000: multiple rooms, every salsa and bachata style, and a crowd that came to dance rather than just to stand at the bar.

The full Friday timeline

Every Friday follows the same schedule, so you can plan your night down to the minute:

  • 7:45 PM — Doors open. Show your valid government ID (21+), check your coat, grab a drink.
  • 8:00 PM — Beginning Bachata lesson.
  • 8:45 PM — Beginning Salsa lesson.
  • 9:00 PM — Intermediate Bachata lesson in the Back Room.
  • 9:30 PM – 1:30 AM — Open social dancing in both rooms.
  • 1:45 AM — Venue closes.

The lessons are included with admission. Once a month there is a live salsa band in place of the DJ for part of the night — watch the upcoming events list or follow @dancefridays on Instagram for band nights.

What each room plays

Dance Fridays runs two rooms so that salsa dancers and bachata dancers both get a full night of their music instead of fighting over a shared playlist.

The salsa room is the main floor. Live DJs play salsa for social dancing, and this is where the monthly live salsa band performs. If you dance on1, on2 or are still counting your basic, you will find partners at your level.

The bachata room is dedicated to bachata all night, with live DJs. It is also where you will find the Back Room Intermediate Bachata lesson at 9:00 PM. Read more about the bachata side of the night on our SF bachata page.

Between the two rooms there is a full bar, a coat check and an outdoor patio for when you need a break and some air.

Who comes to Dance Fridays

Friday at Space 550 is a mixed crowd: complete beginners who booked the 8:00 PM lesson on a whim, people who took classes years ago and want to get back on the floor, and experienced social dancers who come every week. Plenty of people come alone — because the lessons rotate partners and the social floor runs on asking and accepting dances, you do not need to bring anyone.

Groups are common too, especially birthday groups. If you are bringing a birthday group, contact us in advance at 415-309-1284 or info@dancesf.com for a reserved space by the bar and a guest discount.

The first-timer path: 8:00 bachata, 8:45 salsa, then social

If it is your first Friday, follow this path and you will leave able to dance both styles at a basic level:

  • Arrive by 7:45–8:00 PM. You get the closest parking and an easy check-in.
  • 8:00 PM Beginning Bachata. Bachata's basic step is the friendliest place to start.
  • 8:45 PM Beginning Salsa. Learn the salsa basic and a simple turn.
  • 9:30 PM onward, social dancing. Ask people from your lesson to dance — they are at your level and expecting it.

Not sure which style suits you? Our guide Salsa vs. Bachata compares them, and the first-time Dance Fridays guide walks through the whole night step by step.

What to wear

The dress code is nightclub smart or smart casual — dress to impress. There is no sportswear, no shorts and no hats, with Panama-style hats the exception. Leather-soled shoes are recommended because they turn easily on the floor, but comfort comes first: you will be on your feet for hours. Layers help, since the dance rooms warm up and the patio does not.

No outside food, drink or water bottles are allowed; the full bar is inside.

Parking and getting there

Space 550 has a large amount of free street parking outside the venue. Arriving by 8:00 PM for the lessons gets the closest spots, which is one more reason to come early. Uber and Lyft are also recommended — they drop you at the door. For directions, doors and the room layout, see the full Space 550 guide.

Plan your ride home

Dancing ends at 1:30 AM and the venue is open until 1:45 AM. Decide how you are getting home before you arrive — book a rideshare, pick a designated driver, or arrange to leave with friends. Planning the ride home is part of planning a great Friday.

Other places to dance on a Friday in the Bay Area

The Bay Area has a wider Latin dance scene, and it is worth knowing the other names. Schedules change, so always check sfdance.com for the live calendar before you head out:

  • Cigar Bar & Grill — Jackson Square, San Francisco
  • Roccapulco — Mission District, San Francisco
  • El Valenciano — Mission District, San Francisco
  • The Ramp — Dogpatch, San Francisco (Salsa Saturdays)
  • Alberto's — Mountain View
  • Just Dance Ballroom — Oakland

For a neighborhood-by-neighborhood look at the scene, read our guide to Latin night clubs in San Francisco. And if you want more than one night a week, SalsaCrazy Mondays runs classes and a party every Monday from 6:30 PM at Neck of the Woods, 406 Clement St — see salsabachatamondays.com.

Friday salsa etiquette in one minute

Social dancing has a few simple customs, and knowing them makes your first Friday much easier. Ask with a clear "Would you like to dance?" Dance one song, then thank your partner and walk them off the floor or say goodbye. It is completely fine to decline a dance, and it is fine to take a break whenever you need water or air on the patio.

On a crowded Friday floor, keep your movements contained. Save big arm styling and wide turns for when there is open space around you, and always dance at the level of your partner rather than showing off everything you know. These habits are why people come back every week.

Special Fridays this season

Some Fridays are bigger than others. On Friday, October 30, 2026 the Dance Fridays Halloween party brings Julio Bravo live, three rooms (salsa, bachata and cumbia), four dance lessons and a costume contest with awards. On Friday, December 18, 2026 the Dance Fridays Holiday Party features the live salsa band Borinquen with salsa, bachata, cumbia and lessons.

Tickets

Tickets are sold at dancefridays.fun and on Eventbrite. Buying in advance is the cheaper way in: advance tickets start at $15, while the door price is $25. Lessons are included either way.
