Before you go: the checklist
- Ticket — buy in advance at dancefridays.fun or on Eventbrite. Advance starts at $15; the door is $25.
- Valid government ID — Dance Fridays is 21+, no exceptions.
- Shoes — leather soles turn best, but comfortable shoes you can stand in for hours matter more.
- Outfit — nightclub smart or smart casual. No sportswear, shorts or hats (Panama-style excepted).
- A plan for the ride home — dancing ends at 1:30 AM.
- Leave at home — outside food, drinks and water bottles are not allowed.
Getting there and parking
Dance Fridays is at Space 550, 550 Barneveld Ave, San Francisco, CA 94124. There is a large amount of free street parking outside the venue, and arriving by 8:00 PM gets you the closest spots. Uber and Lyft are recommended too. Directions, Muni and the room layout are in the Space 550 guide.
7:45 PM — doors and check-in
Doors open at 7:45 PM. Show your ID and ticket, drop your jacket at the coat check, and take a minute to look around. There are two rooms — a salsa room and a bachata room — a full bar and an outdoor patio. Arriving at doors is the calmest way to start: the rooms are quiet, you can find the lesson area without rushing, and you will recognize faces from the lesson later in the night.
8:00 PM — Beginning Bachata
The night starts with Beginning Bachata. This lesson is genuinely for beginners: you will learn the basic step and how to move with a partner from the very start. Bachata is a friendly first dance because its basic step is simple to pick up, which makes it a confidence builder before salsa.
Partners rotate during the lesson, so whether you came alone or with someone, you will dance with several people. That is normal and part of how everyone learns.
8:45 PM — Beginning Salsa
Next is Beginning Salsa. Again, no experience is needed. You will learn the salsa basic and simple movements you can use on the social floor the same night. If you only have energy for one lesson, pick the dance that excites you — our comparison Salsa vs. Bachata can help — but most first-timers take both.
9:00 PM — Intermediate Bachata (Back Room)
If you already dance some bachata, the Intermediate Bachata lesson runs at 9:00 PM in the Back Room. First-timers who are brand new can skip it and grab a drink or step out to the patio before the social starts.
9:30 PM to 1:30 AM — open social dancing
At 9:30 PM both rooms open up for social dancing with live DJs. Once a month a live salsa band plays. This is where the night really happens: people ask each other to dance, one song at a time, all night.
Your best first move is to ask people from your lesson. They are at your level and expecting to practice. Then branch out. Dance what you learned — the basic step, done on time and with a smile, is a perfectly good dance. Move between the salsa room and the bachata room whenever you like.
Etiquette in five lines
- Ask: "Would you like to dance?"
- One song, then thank your partner.
- It is fine to decline a dance, and fine to take a break.
- Keep your movements contained on a crowded floor.
- Dance at your partner's level.
Coming with a group or celebrating a birthday
Groups are welcome. For a birthday, contact us in advance at 415-309-1284 or info@dancesf.com for a reserved space by the bar and a guest discount.
Salsa room or bachata room?
Space 550 has two rooms. The salsa room is the main floor with live DJs, and once a month a live salsa band. The bachata room plays bachata all night with live DJs. You do not have to choose one — most dancers move between them through the night.
A good first-night plan: spend your first few songs in whichever room matches the lesson you enjoyed most, then try the other. If you want to understand how the two dances differ, read Salsa vs. Bachata, or the room guides for salsa and bachata.
Pacing yourself through the night
A Friday at Space 550 can last from 7:45 PM to 1:30 AM. That is a long time on your feet, so pace yourself. Take breaks on the outdoor patio, drink water from the bar (outside water bottles are not allowed), and do not feel you need to dance every song.
Comfortable shoes matter more than anything else. Leather soles help you turn, but if your feet hurt by 10:00 PM, you will not enjoy the rest of the night. Leave your jacket at the coat check so your hands are free.
You will probably forget some of what you learned in the lessons once the music starts. That is normal. Go back to the basic step, keep time with the music, and enjoy the dance.
After your first night
Come back the next Friday — repetition is how the steps stick. If you want more practice during the week, SalsaCrazy Mondays runs classes followed by a party every Monday from 6:30 PM at Neck of the Woods, 406 Clement St (salsabachatamondays.com), and DanceSF lists salsa and bachata classes across the Bay Area.
Common first-night worries
"I can't dance." That is what the 8:00 and 8:45 PM lessons are for. Everyone on the floor started somewhere.
"I don't have a partner." You do not need one. Partners rotate in class and the social floor is built on dancing with different people.
"I'll feel out of place." Dance Fridays is a mixed crowd of beginners and experienced dancers. It has been produced by SalsaCrazy / DanceCrazy Productions since 1995, and its Eventbrite organizer page counts 1,400+ events and 105,400+ attendees — a lot of people have had their first night here.
The ride home
Social dancing ends at 1:30 AM and the venue is open until 1:45 AM. Book your rideshare or confirm your driver before the last song. Then come back next Friday — the second night is when it starts to click. For more on Fridays in San Francisco, read where to dance salsa in SF on a Friday night.
